THE DEADLY TRUTH ABOUT SELF-HARM

The world has been the sole witness of all of the excursions of man on its land ever since. It has seen amazing things, and has been exposed to innovations. But, just like humans that roam about, it has also seen the budding of a new born creature–and the death of another.

A human creature is considered a living being the moment fertilization begins. It grows inside its mother’s womb for nine months, and when it is time, a new baby would be born–be it male or female. A living creature’s body mechanism works in a very puzzling kind of way either.

Take for example caterpillars. Soon after metamorphosis, they would turn into beautiful creatures we know as butterflies. As for us, humans, it is the same–only that, we don’t turn into a butterfly. We grow and develop our bodies as years go by.

Eventually we age. Our skin would crumble and we would grow weak, small, and feeble–and then we die. That is the natural cycle of life. A majority of people accept this fact wholeheartedly, because we should. But not all; because though some wanted to live longer, some just wanted to die early–in their own hands.

Recently, in India, a student was reported to have committed suicide because of failing to get admission for PhD in the University of Hyderabad–ending his life on campus by slashing his wrist with a broken glass piece. Usually when people feel depressed, they tend to be suicidal, without consulting their problems to a professional. It can also be a cause of self-harm.

Self-harm is when somebody intentionally damages or injures their body by cutting their skin, burning their skin, punching their own body, poisoning self with tablets. Eating disorders are also results of self-harm. This can be very vital, especially in the youth. Research has suggested that self-harm is most common among 15-19-year-olds, and those suffering from anxiety and depression. People often try to keep self-harm a secret because of shame or fear of discovery. Serious parental guidance is needed for these children and they should be healed fast.

However, there are victims of self-harm who still choose to be healed. They chose to stand up against the awful past, and decided to show the world that living a blissful life sure is worth it, even though once in their life they chose to play with broken glass.
